Ancestors and descendants of Seth and Henry W. D. HANDY of Lee, Berkshire, Mass. Hogan Overview | Tree 1 | Tree 2 | Tree 3 | Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | DESCENDANCY CHART -- Richard Handy -- D R A F T Jan 2009 This chart was compiled by a descendant of this HANDY line: Richard HANDY & Hannah UNKNOWN -> Isaac HANDY & Eleanor STEWART -> Joseph HANDY & Lois HATCH -> Seth HANDY & Susannah RUSSELL -> Henry W. D. HANDY & Mary Ann MORGAN -> Mary Ann (HANDY) HOGAN It represents new research on Seth HANDY, four children by his first wife: Barney C. HANDY (aka Barna Coe), Joseph HANDY, Sarah Ann (HANDY) YOUNG and Hannah Parker (HANDY) BARRINGER, and the two children of his second wife: Henry W. D. HANDY and Fanny Fowler (HANDY) BUCK. I have done no personal research on Seth HANDY's ancestors or siblings, but I am including them in this chart for context. To my admittedly limited knowledge, the only offspring of Seth Handy whose lines did not die out are these two: Joseph Handy, who left Lee, Mass for to neighboring Columbia County, New York during the 1830s, and Henry W. D. Handy, my great(2) grandfather, who appeared in Brooklyn, New York around 1850. An overview of the lost lines: George Franklin HANDY and Charles Backus HANDY disappeared from the early Berkshire County records. These two boys might have relocated, but neither has been obvious in census. Their father was not enumerated in the 1820 census, so we are without a family nose count for the 1810-1830 stretch. Hannah Parker (HANDY) BARRINGER was widowed early and had a daughter, but the girl did not marry. Fanny (HANDY) BUCK, with her husband and three small children, moved to Livonia, New York during the mid 1860s. One son died unmarried. One son married and lost a child in infancy. Fanny's daughter Lydia BUCK is not identifiable in census or vital records after 1880. However, Fanny reported in 1900 and 1910 censuses that all her children were alive, so Lydia evidently survived, and probably under a married name, so this story is unfinished. Census listings suggest that Sarah Ann YOUNG and Barney C. HANDY had no direct descendants and their wills suggest only collateral survivors. Their estates were divided among siblings, nieces and stepsons. The two Hellens mystery(s): in the 1855 and 1860 censuses, Barney and his wife's household included a girl born circa 1844 and identified as Hellen S. HANDY. She was a perfect age for a daughter, but the fact that this girl was not in the family's 1850 census listing suggests an adoptive relationship. Was the 1850 listing incomplete? Was Hellen a daughter of a deceased brother? Was she simply missed in the 1850 enumeration? Hellen HANDY was last seen in the 1860 census, and absent from Massachusetts death or marriage records. In a separate mystery, or perhaps an extension of the one above, Barney's will left a legacy to a "half-sister" named "Hellen MCCLELLAN," who does not fit into any known structure. Lee vital records suggest that Seth Handy had only two marriages and children born only to Susannah RUSSELL and Hannah PARKER. Did Seth have an unrecorded marriage, death and birth during the ten-year period between marriages? Were the relationships stated in the will equivalent to relationships we understand today? Was Hellen in fact, his wife's half-sister? Was the will inaccurate? To our knowledge, Barney had only one half-sister: Fanny (HANDY) BUCK, who was, in fact, the only known omission from Barney's will. It appears that there were two Hellens, the idiosyncratic spelling being a coincidence. The only scenarios that could merge the two into one is if the Hellen HANDY from the 1855-1860 census was an illegitimate daughter of Seth, born when he was in his late 70s, or if Seth Handy legally adopted a daughter of one of his deceased sons. Her parents were Nathaniel Patten RUSSEL(L) and Elizabeth CULVER RUSSEL. Nathaniel P. RUSSELL's ancestry is well documented and I have researched his and Elizabeth's descendants. (RUSSELL chart) |
