The Maelstrom - A Family Chronicle A pioneer in the use of "found footage," the brilliant Hungarian director Pter Forgcs (Free Fall, BJFF 1998) chronicles the lives of the Dutch Jewish Peereboom family during the period 1938 to 1942 using the family's own home movies. By intercutting footage of births, weddings, and family outings with clips demonstrating the Nazi takeover of Holland, Forgcs offers a chilling portrait of the times and constructs a powerful testament to Jewish family life and survival. Tibor Szemz composed the score.

Preceded by: King Of The Jews Filmmaker Jay Rosenblatt (The Smell of Burning Ants, BJFF 1996, and Human Remains, BJFF 1998) also puts found footage to brilliant use. A childhood trip to Radio City Music Hall to see King of Kings and a young Jewish boy's shock at learning that Jesus was a Jew inspired this meditation on Jesus Christ and spiritual transcendence.

s Under the strong and inspirational leadership of Gustav Mahler's niece, Alma Ros, the Auschwitz Orchestra maintained the highest standards, thus ensuring the Nazis' approval and the survival of its more than 40 female members. In director Michel Daron's exquisite documentary, J.S. Bach in Auschwitz, 12 of these musicians speak of their experiences, several for the first time. Bach's La Chaconne, considered one of the most difficult works for violin, was the composition that one of the women chose to play when she auditioned for the Auschwitz Orchestra.
An Evening with Ben Katchor

Sun Nov 5 - 7:00 pm

(Director: Sam Ball
USA 1999, 13 min. English, 16 mm)
In person: Ben Katchor with Pleasures of Urban Decay
Urban Navigation and a Plan for "Carfare City" McArthur fellowship winner Ben Katchor is a master of graphic storytelling. His nationally syndicated comic strip Ben Katchor's Cardboard Valise and his novels The Jew of New York (1998, Pantheon Books) and Julius Knipl, Real Estate Photographer: The Beauty Supply District (2000, Pantheon Books) reflect an obsession with the urban landscape. In this lecture and slide-show performance, the artist presents his eccentric plan for an urban utopian community where the lines between public and private space blur and streetcars pass through bedrooms. USA 1996, 45 min., English
In person: director Sam Ball
Sponsored by: The Million Year Picnic

Boston Premiere Ben Katchor's Yiddish-inflected voice guides us through a vast and shadowy landscape of old skyscrapers, neglected warehouses, layaway stores and all-night cafeterias. Director Sam Ball, Ben Katchor, and his cartoon creation Julius Knipl Real Estate Photographer help us uncover the symbolism and romance of New York's TV antennae, cellar doors and water towers, turning the city's everyday trappings into urban poetry.

(Director: Valerii Ogorodnikov Russia/Germany 1999 111 min. Russian/German/English w/subtitles, 35 mm)
In person: director Valerii Ogorodnikov Sponsored by: Jewish Studies and Cinema Studies at Northeastern University

Boston Premiere It's 1953 and Stalin has recently died. Somewhere in the Ural Mountains, on the frontier between Europe and Asia, are barracks in which a microcosm of Soviet society resides. This motley group, consisting mostly of deportees, includes Jora, a one-legged Jewish photographer; Friedrich, a former German soldier married to a Russian; newcomer Olga whose family was killed in a Stalinst purge; drunken Polina and her Tartar husband Karim; crazy Guerka; and militiaman Alexei who oversees the barracks and has his sights set on Olga. Humorous, unsettling, and visually stunning, Barracks paints a vivid picture of people trying to cope with the past, each other, and the aftermath of Stalinism.

Meet Eddie Rosner, the premiere jazz musician of the Communist world and the man whom Louis Armstrong nicknamed the "White Armstrong." Born in 1910 in Poland, Rosner, a child prodigy, gets caught up in the history of jazz, Nazi Europe, and the Soviet Empire. Persecuted by the Nazis as a "degenerate" musician and a Jew, he flees to the Soviet Union. Stalin first elevates Rosner to the position of State Musician but later banishes him to the gulag for "rootless cosmopolitanism." By means of rare documents, archival footage, and accounts from Rosner's contemporaries, director Pierre-Hen JFIF H H C %# , #&')*)-0-(0%()( C ((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((( " } !1AQa"q2#BR$3br
