based on oral tradition + surviving bap certs gives 9. Eugene (bap) and Owen (lore) are

Note the 24-year childbearing span (Rose at age 23--Matthew at age 47),
which casts suspicion on Matthew's oft stated year of birth.
Note also, leap between last certified birth (1840) and Matthew, with 2 or
3 potential children to fit within that gap.
